Submission Period

Please note that Savant-Garde is no longer accepting submissions until further notice. Thank you for your understanding.

Below are our previous submission guidelines.

What We're Looking For:

Whether poetry or fiction, we are particularly interested in reading work that will transport us, that will have us still thinking about it hours or days after reading it. We encourage you to read previous issues to see if your work may be a good fit for our journal as our focus can sometimes be difficult to pinpoint in terms of genre, and we tend to curate our issues so all pieces work together.

Our editors are fascinated by the awe-inspiring, almost mystical elements of the world––those that help elicit wonder, or fear even. We want to read about different ways to experience or live our lives, strong emotions in difficult realities, escaping to a better place, tender moments, the good, the bad, and everything in between, whether real or imagined. In short, we love beautiful, gut-wrenching, purposeful writing that encourages us to feel connected to others. We are open to a wide range of genres (literary, experimental, fantasy, horror with a purpose) including genre-blending. Please note, however, that heavy gore, gratuitous violence, and erotica are unlikely to find a home with us.

Savant-Garde encourages individuals regardless of ability, race, religion, age, sexual orientation, or gender identity to share their stories. As a Canada-based journal, we strive to feature work from Canada-based authors, Indigenous authors who live within Canadian settler borders, or work that itself has a tie to this country in every issue. However, we accept submissions from creators who come from all over the world.

Below, you will find the fiction and poetry guidelines. Please make sure to follow them before submitting.

Fiction Guidelines

  • Submissions of fiction should be no longer than 3,000 words.

  • Please submit only one piece per submission period.

Send submissions as attachments to: savantgardesubmissions@gmail.com with the subject line: fiction submission_yourname.

Please include your name (or pen name), the title of the story, the word count and a brief bio in your email. You are welcome to disclose any additional information about yourself or your work if you believe it may be relevant, especially for own-voices material. We encourage you to share your pronouns with us to ensure we can address you properly.

All submissions should be Word files (.doc or .docx), and they should be double spaced, ideally in Times New Roman 12 pt font, with numbered pages, titled as follows: fiction submission_yourname.doc.

Please only add your name to the top right or left of the document's first page, rather than in the headers.

Poetry Guidelines

  • Please submit a portfolio of no more than four poems (4). Each poem should be no longer than two pages.

  • Please use spaces instead of tabs to format your poetry.

  • Please note that we are unlikely to accept micro poems.

Send submissions as one document in an attachment to: savantgardesubmissions@gmail.com with the subject line: Poetry submission_yourname.

All submissions should be Word files (.doc or .docx), with numbered pages, and titled as follows: poetry submission_yourname.doc. Please begin every new poem on a new page, inserting a page break. Please use spaces instead of tabs to shape or format your poems as it makes it easier for us when formatting our issue.

Please only add your name to the top right or left of the document's first page.

Please Note:

  • We accept simultaneous submissions provided that we are notified if/when the submission is accepted elsewhere.

  • Savant-Garde pays a $20 CAD honorarium for every piece published.

  • You may send both a fiction and a poetry submission during a submission period, but not multiple submissions within each genre. For example, you can send us one short story and one portfolio of 1-4 poems, but not two short stories or two poetry portfolios.

  • If your submission is rejected, please wait until the next submission period to send another.

  • If you submit a piece and do not receive a verification email within 24 hours, please query.

  • Once a piece has been published all rights return to the author. All that we ask, is to be credited as the initial publisher.

  • We will not publish blatantly sexist, racist, ableist, homophobic, xenophobic, or any sort of discriminatory pieces. Please do not submit them.

  • We do not accept plagiarism. Do not submit plagiarized material. We will do our best to catch any plagiarism, but if you suspect a piece we have published has been plagiarised, please contact us via our submission email so we can address the situation and remove the piece.

  • If you have any questions, contact us at savantgardesubmissions@gmail.com.
